Healthy Kids Meals

Image
If adults have a hard time staying healthy, so do kids. Coming up with healthy kids meals so that they stay in tiptop shape is a common challenge for parents. Here are some tips which can help you come up with delicious and healthy recipes. The first on the list is to always have a plan for the week. If your kid is just starting with his diet, make exceptions for certain days of the week. You can give your kid the regular favorites once a week, in moderate portions. For example, start the week with a healthy soup and salad for the first three days and then reward him with pizza at the end of the week. This way, he doesn't feel deprived and can still eat the foods that he constantly craves for. Ask your kids to prepare the meal with you. Make cooking an enjoyable activity and so they differentiate the healthy and not-so-healthy foods. By letting them help prepare the meals, they appreciate food better because they cooked the food themselves. Among the healthy kids mea...

New Moms Can Return to Work and Still Have Healthy Kids

Image
Controversy abounds with the release of a new study that claims children of moms who work full or part time are more likely to develop poor eating and exercise habits. The study appeared in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health which assessed the habits of 12,576 five-year-olds of working mothers. Unfortunately, this study did nothing to alleviate the guilt that has haunted most working moms since they began to join the workforce generations ago. The world is full of employed people who someday decide to become parents. All expectant parents approach their new life with their first little bundle of joy full of grand anticipation and excitement. Yet not all are completely prepared for the reality of adjusting to first time family life as working parents. Many new parents accept the fact that going back to work will prove to be quite a challenge but they believe it is definitely feasible - after all their co-workers have done it. Despite this positive...

Healthy Beverages for Kids Equal Healthy Kids

It's a cultural phenomenon - in school and homes around the country in the past few years, kids have started drinking soda instead of milk and natural juices on a routine basis. Sodas - basically colored, sugared water - have replaced far more nutritional alternatives almost exclusively with some children and teens, contributing not only to an increase in childhood obesity but to a much greater incidence of childhood caries (cavities in teeth). Perhaps even more alarming, teenage girls who opt for sodas instead of milk on a regular basis have been discovered to have sometimes irreversible osteoporosis, a condition in which calcium in the bones has disappeared, leaving bones porous, brittle, and easily broken. Another problem with sodas, from Coke to Mountain Dew, is that many of them contain large amounts of caffeine - way too much, in fact, for the physiology of a small child to handle. (Your kid can't settle down and get to sleep at night? Before you suspec...

Basic Dental Care - Infants and Children

Image
You know that you should brush your teeth at least twice daily to maintain proper dental health. But do you know how your infant's or young child's teeth should be taken care of? It is just as important for their teeth to be maintained, to ensure healthy tooth growth and proper development. Infants always require special attention since they cannot take care of themselves. They do not have visible teeth, but this does not mean that they do not require dental attention. On the contrary, it is quite necessary to keep their gums and mouth healthy. First, a dental history of the mother should be obtained in order to determine possible dental problems for the child. Hopefully this history will aid in disease prevention. About the time an infant is six months old, he should be taken to a doctor and screened for signs of tooth development. Children should see a dentist by the time they are twelve months old. If they are not seen by their first birthday, they shoul...

How Parents Can Make Their Kids Healthy

Image
Good health begins at a young age, and even before the child leaves the womb. This means that mothers should take special care with what they eat and do during pregnancy. Regular light activity and a healthy balanced diet will help mothers start their child off with a healthy start from day one. This is very important, especially to avoid birth complications. In the first few years of life, breast feeding is recommended. Breast milk makes healthy kids, and it has been shown again and again in various research studies. It improves cognitive ability, and is much safer than formula that comes in powder form. If the mother is unable to breast feed, then choosing healthy and natural formula is recommended. In the toddler years it is important to start feeding kids fresh foods and a healthy balanced diet. Avoid junk food, and only give it as a treat. Healthy kids should get a regular diet of fruits and veggies that is recommended by their pediatrician. Teaching the child t...

Dental Care: 9 Myths and Facts About Cavities

Image
Good dental care begins by regulating what you put in your mouth. At least that's what dentists say, but who's listening to them anyway? Recent studies reveal that people are not listening to their doctors when it comes to cavities. Thus, a number of myths have become popular belief. Here are a few of the most common ones. Sugar Is The Only Thing That Causes Cavities This is a myth, perhaps of the highest order. Cavities are actually produced when bacteria creates acids in the mouth. Any carb you consume starts that process. That includes sugars, but also includes bread, rice, vegetables and fruits. Any combination of these food products can trigger your mouth's bacteria to create unwanted acids. Acid Causes Tooth Decay This is true. Acidic foods (including coffee) can weaken your enamel, which makes your teeth more prone to decay. Along with practicing good dental care, limiting your intake of acidic products throughout the day can greatly reduce your risk of...
