Healthy Baby Tips - Why & How to Sanitize Baby Bottles
After every feed, bottles, teats and equipment must be washed in hot soapy water. A bottle brush must be used to get to the base of the bottle, and the teats should be turned inside out and rubbed with salt to remove particles of milk, then rinsed in cold water before being sterilised.
There are two methods of sanitizing baby bottles:
- Boiling Teats and bottles must be immersed in a large saucepan of water and boiled for ten minutes. They should be left in the same water until needed.
- Chemical The chemical may be in the form of a sterilisation tablet which is dropped into the correct quantity of water, or it may be a sterilising liquid which is used with water in the correct proportions. The bottles and teats are immersed in the solution, taking care to see that all the air is out of the bottle, and they are left there until needed (for at least 30 minutes). The solution needs changing daily. Manufacturer's instructions should be carefully read and followed. The bottles and teats may be rinsed before use with boiled water, to get rid of the chemical taste.
It is important that bottles and teats are washed and sterilised after every feed.
Making up the feeds -- Important points:
- Wash your hands before beginning.
- Read the instructions on the packet and follow the directions carefully.
- Use the scoop provided in the packet. Do not press the milk powder down too closely; this concentrates the food and can eventually cause the baby severe kidney damage. Make sure, however, that the scoop is full, otherwise the milk solution will be too weak.
- Do not add anything, such as sugar, salt or flavourings. The milk has been carefully balanced to give the infant all the nutrients he needs.
- The water used must be boiled and then cooled.
- A full day's food can be made up and the bottles kept in the refrigerator.
- Fold down the top of the bag containing the milk powder and cover with the lid. Store the milk in a cool, dry cupboard.
